The History of Polaris®

Polaris® is one of the largest North American powersports manufacturers and for good reason. They offer excellent products and fantastic service, but they weren’t always the juggernaut they are today. To go to the beginning of Polaris®, we have to go all the way back to 1945. WWII was drawing to a close, but metal and machine production was still expensive. Hetteen Hoist & Derrick was a small shop that made custom products for local farmers. However, this work was mostly seasonal, and when they weren’t building machines, they were out hunting in the wilderness around their Canadian home base. Eventually, they wanted an easier, faster way to travel through the snow, and designed the first functional snowmobile.

Hand on the Pulse

The snowmobile quickly gained popularity throughout the region and beyond. By 1960, they’d officially rebranded as Polaris® and had produced hundreds of sleds. At this point, they reexamined the sled design and created a product that was more recreational. The success was instantaneous. These machines were so popular that the company had to look for outside managerial help and eventually became part of Textron. Their success continued well into the 1970s and it seemed as if the good times would just keep rolling.

Innovative Growth

Unfortunately, an economic downturn brought all the success crashing down. Textron looked to cut its losses and suggested the company president, W. Hall Wendel Jr., do the same. But Wendel was determined. With only 100 workers, he began the process of rebuilding the company, repaying their debt ahead of schedule and bursting back into the market as a serious powersports manufacturer. Their luck officially changed in 1984 when they released their first ATV. Once again, they saw instant success. Over the decades, they added more and more products to their lineup and were once again a household name.
